Today’s Guardian suggests that the Government are hoping that UNISON members will accept the new (and – ahem – “improved”) pay offers in health and local government. This would isolate the fight against the public sector pay freeze being waged by PCS.
In relation to local government, Conference policy clearly instructs the Service Group Executive to recommend rejection of any offer worth 2.5% or less, so perhaps the Government won’t get things all their own way.
We need a vigorous campaign if we are to mobilise members to fight for a decent pay increase and (obviously) most of this cannot be done online. However we do have a petition to sign online (thanks to Barnet UNISON) and a Facebook group which now appears to be growing (although as political Facebook groups go the great success has to be the excellent initiative to call for the racist British National Party to be kicked off Facebook.) (This blog has a policy of no platform for racism and fascism in line with UNISON’s aims and values so I am not asking for an argument here about the importance of silencing the far right - my point is to observe the success of an initiative from the left which has 3,000 members now.)
I’m interested in how we, as union activists, can make better use of the new opportunities opening up online – it’s all part of new unionism…
