Strike action on the agenda

Not that I am the first with the news but PCS have announced a ballot of their public sector membership for discontinuous strike action over pay, based on a plan of action covering three months from November, when NUT members are also likely to be taking strike action.

The PCS campaign video is online at http://www.pcs.org.uk/en/campaigns/pay-campaign/pay-campaign-video.cfm.

The attack on the living standards of civil servants by this disgraceful Government is certainly particularly horrifying.

However with inflation pushing past 5% rumours of a 3.2% offer to local government workers in England and Wales are no cause for joy. The Government are on the ropes and the trade unions should be standing together - and striking together - to reverse the public sector pay policy.

We should be making plans to coordinate further strike action with teachers and civil servants and consulting our members on a positive strategy to win higher pay - not asking forlornly what action members might take without offering such a strategy.

I am looking forward to our Deputy General Secretary moving Composite 15 tomorrow and calling for the unified campaign and national demonstration to which UNISON is now committed.

"...rumours of a 3.2% offer to local government workers in England and Wales..." are completely without foundation.
