Time for a change

UNISON has so much potential and so much promise.

We, as UNISON members, could achieve so much.

In the past year it was the line of the UNISON leadership which prevented an effective joint public sector struggle over pay.

In the years before that it was UNISON's leadership who prevented active unity over public service pensions.

I know this because I have been (a minority!) part of that leadership which has so let us down.

Let us now fight for a leadership for our wonderful trade union which deserves our excellent membership.

Yes we can....

How comes you face such fierce opposition within your own branch Jon? Lost count as to how many different subdivisions within the left you have now?

I think, dear anon, that you are somewhat missing the point.

As to the Lambeth Branch it just re-elected its joint Branch Secretaries unopposed. We have a long tradition of robust debate which I welcome, but it is precisely overwhelming support within the branch which enables me to do everything else that I do.

As to subdivisions on the left, I guess you haven't been paying attention to the excellent UnionFutures blog where you can read about the united rank and file slate for the UNISON NEC.

There are many different socialist views, but there is a hunger for unity right now. As a Labour leftwinger I am happy and proud to stand alongside independent socialists and non-aligned activists and of members of the Socialist Workers Party, Socialist Party, Alliance for Workers Liberty and indeed any and every leftwing group prepared to work together with fellow socialists and democrats.

I think you may be working to an out of date world view if you think the left in UNISON is divided :)
