Unions must fight to defend public services

The scale of public spending restrictions which we now face over coming years means that whichever Party is in Government after the next General Election, the trade unions have to fight for a change in policy.

This seems to be moment at which the Trade Union Coordinating Group could come into its own - since the TUC does not appear to see the coming crisis. Public service unions need to issue clear warnings to our members about the struggle ahead.

UNISON needs to work together with our allies in the movement to prepare to defend ourselves against attacks upon our jobs and pensions - these allies do not include the present Government.

If you still haven't voted in the UNISON NEC elections don't forget to vote for the candidates who are committed to doing this joint trade union work.

It has been surprising the lack of response of the TUC, I wrote to them a number of times through the GMB concerning our concerns of the Remploy factories and the worry of the welfare reforms.

For example a large number of people sacked at Remploy factories have still not found work and some were refused welfare benefits but given JSA on the grounds they could work.

Yet the response from a lot of Unions and the TUC has been Welfare is expensive and needs modernization. At one stage the TUC stated Labour had taken the bull by the horns concerning fraud.
