UNISON structures consultation - get commenting

Having just posted about something radical and fun, I thought I should resume normal service on the blog. UNISON activists need to be aware of the current consultation on the review of branch and service group structures.

This review was agreed at last year’s Conference. The NEC development and organisation (D&O) committee established a steering group to implement motion 6. The steering group includes members from the D&O committee, service groups, regional convenors, as well as key officers. They have met regularly since autumn
2005 and have been looking at branches, the role of service groups, new ways of organising, trade union developments elsewhere, as well as the future direction of public services. (I did try to get on the working group but my NEC colleagues had other ideas!)

A recent survey of UNISON members indicated that members needing their union were most likely to approach a local workplace rep (a shop steward) and that those seeking the help of the union were most likely to be satisfied with help from their shop steward. At present the Union organises shop stewards primarily through our branch structures. The consultation document (linked to above) asks a series of questions. Regions are being asked to coordinate consultation, but there is nothing to prevent branches responding directly.

The results will be considered by the project steering group, who will make recommendations to the NEC’s D&O committee. A report will be prepared, on behalf of the NEC, for national delegate conference 2007.

The deadline for the current consultation is 31 December.
