Men fight and lose the battle, and the thing that they fought for comes about in spite of their defeat, and when it comes turns out not to be what they meant, and other men have to fight for what they meant under another name. (William Morris - A Dream of John Ball)

UNISON NEC on the road

Today's meeting of UNISON's National Executive Council (NEC) is taking place over the road in Hamilton House, headquarters of the National Union of Teachers.

This does not signify a possible merger!

It's just that the lifts aren't working in our ill-starred white elephant on the Euston Road and so we can't reach the prestigious ninth floor Conference Centre, boasting panoramic views of London.

Nor, for some reason, can we use the more than adequate alternative meeting facilities on our ground floor.

Today's meeting will receive a statement from our President and General Secretary rightly stressing the priority to be attached to implementing Conference policy on organising the fragmented workforce.

We need to take our resources to where they are needed to organise the workforce.

Whether we need a flashy Central London office, large parts of which have been kept vacant for four years, is perhaps an open question.
